GLP-1 refers to glucagon-like peptide-1, this is a naturally occurring hormone in the body that plays a role in regulating blood sugar and appetite. GLP-1 agonists are medications that mimic this hormone and are used to treat type 2 diabetes and, in some cases, obesity.
GLP-1 agonists are medications that mimic the effects of the natural hormone glucagon like peptide-1 (GLP-1). They work by stimulating insulin production in the pancreas, slowing down digestion, reducing appetite, and lowering blood sugar levels.
GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) are prescription-only medications, meaning they can only be obtained with a prescription from a qualified healthcare professional in nurse independent prescriber or pharmacist. They are not available over-the-counter.These medications are used to manage type 2 diabetes and, in some cases, obesity.
Obtaining a prescription for a GLP-1RA typically involves a consultation with our Practitioner to assess the patient’s suitability and ensure safe and appropriate prescribing
GLP-1RAs are classified as prescription-only medicines (POMs), requiring a prescription from a qualified healthcare professional before they can be dispensed. Some common GLP-1RAs include semaglutide (Wegovy, Ozempic), liraglutide (Saxenda), and tirzepatide (Mounjaro).
These medications are primarily used for managing type 2 diabetes and can also be used for weight management in individuals who are overweight or obese.
We could only prescribe this treatment for obesity and you must meet our criteria to be eligible. Not all individuals may be eligible for GLP-1RA prescriptions. Our Practitioner will assess factors like BMI, medical history, and other relevant conditions to determine if a prescription is appropriate and you will be closely monitored throughout your treatment so that doses can be titrated to ensure excellent therapeutic outcomes and safety
GLP-1 RAs are approved by the FDA for treating type 2 diabetes and are often prescribed for weight loss. They are generally considered safe when used as prescribed by a doctor. Patients must meet specific criteria to be prescribed GLP-1 RAs for weight loss.
We only use prescription medicines that have been rigorously tested. The choice of medication may depend upon several factors including medical history and tolerance.
Common side effects of GLP-1 medications, particularly GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs), include gastrointestinal issues like nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and constipation. Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) is also a potential side effect, especially if taking other diabetes medications.
The long answer is that while research is limited, health experts say alcoholic beverages pose some theoretical health risks to people on GLP-1 drugs — and in general, drinking may interfere with your health and weight loss goals.
