Excessive SWEATING & HYPERHIDROSIS
AFTERCARE ADVICE

Botulinum Toxin Type A (Bta) Botox® Bocouture®is indicated and licensed for the treatment of severe primary axillary sweating, (the diagnosed medical term for this is Hyperhidrosis), that is inadequately managed with topical agents. Its safety and efficacy have not been established for the treatment of hyperhidrosis on the hands, feet, scalp or face. Botulinum toxin injection is generally a safe and effective treatment method, nevertheless certain side effects can occur.

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS ASSOCIATED WITH INJECTIONS

These will resolve spontaneously within hours or days, but may persist for longer.

  • Pain or stinging sensation when the injection is performed
  • Localized swelling, redness, tenderness
  • Bleeding at the sites of injection
  • Bruising
  • Numbness or itching of the area following injection

RARE SIDE EFFECTS

In general, adverse reactions occur within the first week following injection and while generally temporary, may have a duration of several months, or longer. Successful treatment can significantly reduce sweating in the treatment area for a period of 6-12 months. The successful outcome varies by degree and how long it lasts from one individual to another and cannot be guaranteed. Treatment may be repeated once the therapeutic effect has worn off.

  • Compensatory sweating from other areas of the body.
  • Aching or weakness in the upper arms, which is temporary
  • Infection
  • Pharyngitis
  • Flu syndrome
  • Headache
  • Fever
  • Anxiety
  • Neck or back pain

TREATMENT

The treatment is short and you will experience slight discomfort, prior to the procedure a local anaesthetic Cream LMX4® is administered topically to the axillary area, this cream is left for 30 minutes. Superficial injections of the Botox® Bocouture® are administered over the axillary area in an imaginary grid spacing them apart, you may experience minor bleeding and swelling this is normal.

The treatment can take several days to two weeks to experience the full effects and you should expect a reduction of your hyperhidrosis of approximately 40 – 50% however many people experience a reduction of 60 – 80%. A review appointment will be booked which must be no later than 21 days post initial treatment where a review of the treatment will be conducted. Following the review a dose adjustment may be made if deemed appropriate.

2ND REVIEW

In the event that the treatment has not improved by more than 40% a minors test will be conducted, iodine is applied to the axillary area and cornstarch will be applied this will change in colour to black where the perspiration is still active, which will indicate where further treatment with Botox® Bocouture® would be administered, this treatment is not free of charge but will be charged at a basic rate of £1.50 per unit at this stage a maximum of 50 units can be administered, £75.00.

Botulinum Toxin administration can result in anaphylaxis (a severe allergic reaction) which in itself is life threatening and requires immediate medical attention. Symptoms of a severe allergic reaction can include shortness of breath, wheezing,coughing, difficulty swallowing, swelling of the tongue, eyelids, lips, hoarseness of the voice, stomach pain, nausea or diarrhoea. If you have any of the above symptoms please report to your nearest Accident and Emergency Department or call 999 for an ambulance.

I understand that though complications are uncommon, they do sometimes occur. It is possible that side effects not described may occur and indeed that a complication not previously reported may occur for the first time. I understand if I suffer any adverse reactions that are not expected, or concern me, I must contact my practitioner, and book a review appointment.  MD Medical Aesthetics Ltd cannot take responsibility for complications or results that have not been reported, assessed, documented and managed in a timely manner.  Whilst I have been advised of the probable result, this cannot be interpreted as a guarantee. Results vary from one individual to another.

I confirm that the medical health history form has been completed truthfully and I am fully aware that withholding medical information, including history of previous treatment, may be detrimental to the safe and optimal outcome of any treatment administered.  If there are any changes in my medical history, I must inform the practitioner.
