Botulinum Toxin Type A (Bta) Botox® Bocouture®is indicated and licensed for the treatment of severe primary axillary sweating, (the diagnosed medical term for this is Hyperhidrosis), that is inadequately managed with topical agents. Its safety and efficacy have not been established for the treatment of hyperhidrosis on the hands, feet, scalp or face. Botulinum toxin injection is generally a safe and effective treatment method, nevertheless certain side effects can occur.

These will resolve spontaneously within hours or days, but may persist for longer.

  • Pain or stinging sensation when the injection is performed
  • Localized swelling, redness, tenderness
  • Bleeding at the sites of injection
  • Bruising
  • Numbness or itching of the area following injection

In general, adverse reactions occur within the first week following injection and while generally temporary, may have a duration of several months, or longer. Successful treatment can significantly reduce sweating in the treatment area for a period of 6-12 months. The successful outcome varies by degree and how long it lasts from one individual to another and cannot be guaranteed. Treatment may be repeated once the therapeutic effect has worn off.

  • Compensatory sweating from other areas of the body.
  • Aching or weakness in the upper arms, which is temporary
  • Infection
  • Pharyngitis
  • Flu syndrome
  • Headache
  • Fever
  • Anxiety
  • Neck or back pain

The treatment is short and you will experience slight discomfort, prior to the procedure a local anaesthetic Cream LMX4® is administered topically to the axillary area, this cream is left for 30 minutes. Superficial injections of the Botox® Bocouture® are administered over the axillary area in an imaginary grid spacing them apart, you may experience minor bleeding and swelling this is normal.

The treatment can take several days to two weeks to experience the full effects and you should expect a reduction of your hyperhidrosis of approximately 40 – 50% however many people experience a reduction of 60 – 80%. A review appointment will be booked which must be no later than 21 days post initial treatment where a review of the treatment will be conducted. Following the review a dose adjustment may be made if deemed appropriate.

In the event that the treatment has not improved by more than 40% a minors test will be conducted, iodine is applied to the axillary area and cornstarch will be applied this will change in colour to black where the perspiration is still active, which will indicate where further treatment with Botox® Bocouture® would be administered, this treatment is not free of charge but will be charged at a basic rate of £1.50 per unit at this stage a maximum of 50 units can be administered, £75.00.
